Augusto de Carvalho Rodrigues dos Anjos (born April 20, 1884 – died November 12, 1914) was a famous Brazilian poet and teacher. His poems often talked about serious topics like illness and sadness. Many people see his work as a step towards Modernism in Brazil.
He is honored as the patron of the first seat at the Paraiban Academy of Letters.
Biography
Augusto dos Anjos was born in 1884. He grew up on a sugar cane farm called Pau d'Arco. This farm was in the city of Cruz do Espírito Santo in Paraíba, Brazil. Today, the farm is part of Sapé.
Augusto first learned at home from his father. Later, he went to Lyceu Paraibano. He even became a teacher there in 1908. Augusto started writing poems when he was only 7 years old.
In 1903, he began studying Law at the University of Recife. He finished his studies in 1907. In 1910, he married Ester Fialho.
He started working as a judge and moved to Rio de Janeiro. There, he taught at many schools. He also began to share his poems in magazines and newspapers. In 1912, he published his first and only poetry book, called Eu (which means "Me"). When it first came out, people had different opinions about it.
His friend, Órris Soares, later added more of his poems. He republished the book in 1919 as Eu e Outras Poesias. Since then, people have liked it much more.
Augusto dos Anjos was working as a headmaster at a school. This school was in the city of Leopoldina, Minas Gerais. He passed away on November 12, 1914, from pneumonia.
His Work
Augusto dos Anjos published only one book during his life. It was called Eu. The poems in this book often talked about serious topics. These included sickness, death, and feelings of sadness. He also used many scientific and philosophical words in his writing.
Literary experts are not sure which writing style Augusto dos Anjos belonged to. Some say he was a Symbolist. Others say he was a Parnassian. However, a writer named Ferreira Gullar said he was a Pre-Modernist. This means his style came before the Modernism movement.
