Augustus Abbott (born January 7, 1804 – died February 25, 1867) was an important British army officer. He was the oldest of several famous brothers. He fought in several wars, including the First Anglo-Afghan War. He retired from the army because he was not well and later died in Cheltenham, England.

Early Life and Education

Augustus Abbott was born in London, England. He was the first son of Henry Alexius Abbott, who used to be a merchant, and Margaret Welsh. He went to school at Winchester College. Later, he trained to become an army officer at the East India Company's Addiscombe Military Seminary from 1818 to 1819.

Military Career Highlights

In 1819, when he was just 15 years old, Augustus Abbott traveled to British India. He started his army career as a second lieutenant. By 1835, he had become a captain.

Serving in the First Anglo-Afghan War

From 1838 to 1842, Abbott served bravely in the First Anglo-Afghan War. He played a key role during the siege of Jalalabad. This was an important battle where his skills were very helpful.

Later Service and Promotions

Abbott was promoted to major in 1845. He helped capture Peshawar in 1849, during the end of the Second Anglo-Sikh War. During the Rebellion of 1857, he was in Lahore. He successfully kept peace in the city during this difficult time.

After the rebellion, he was sent to Rawalpindi. He was promoted to Major-General in 1859. However, he had to return home earlier that year because of poor health. He passed away in Cheltenham in 1867.

Family Life

Augustus Abbott came from a notable family. He had several brothers who also became famous:

Augustus Abbott married twice. His first wife was Charlotte Corbyn Becher, whom he married in 1835. They had two daughters together. Charlotte passed away in 1839.

In 1843, he married Sophia Frances Garstin. With Sophia, he had four daughters and three sons. One of his sons, Henry Alexis Abbott, also became an army officer and served in the Second Anglo-Afghan War.
