Augustus Herman Pettibone (January 21, 1835 – November 26, 1918) was an American politician. He served as a member of the United States House of Representatives for Tennessee. He was also a lawyer and a soldier.
Early Life and Education
Augustus Herman Pettibone was born on January 21, 1835, in Bedford, Ohio. His parents were Augustus N. and Nancy L. Pettibone.
He went to college at Hiram College in Ohio. Later, he graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1859. After college, he studied law. He became a lawyer in 1860. He started his law practice in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
Pettibone was married three times. His first wife was Mary C. Speck. His second wife was Sara Bradford Young. His third wife was Serafina Deery M. Trigg.
Military and Early Career
During the American Civil War, Pettibone joined the Union Army in 1861. He started as a private. He was promoted to second lieutenant, then captain, and finally major. He served in the 20th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment.
After the war, in 1865, Pettibone continued practicing law in Greeneville, Tennessee. He served as an alderman (a city council member) for Greeneville from 1866 to 1868. He was also an attorney general for Tennessee's first judicial circuit in 1869 and 1870.
In 1871, he became an assistant United States district attorney for eastern Tennessee. He held this job until 1880. In 1878, he tried to get elected to Congress but was not successful. He was chosen as a delegate for the Republican National Convention in 1880.
Political Career
Pettibone was a member of the Republican Party. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives three times. He served from March 4, 1881, to March 3, 1887.
In 1886, he decided not to run for Congress again. He went back to working as a lawyer. Later, he served in the Tennessee House of Representatives from 1897 to 1899.
From 1899 to 1905, he worked as a special agent for the General Land Office. This office managed public lands for the government. He resigned from this role in 1905.
Death
Augustus Herman Pettibone passed away on November 26, 1918, in Nashville, Tennessee. He is buried in the Nashville National Cemetery in Madison, Tennessee.
