Ausserferrera (which is called Farera in the local Romansh language) is a small village located in the Hinterrhein District in the Swiss Canton of Graubünden. It used to be its own independent town. But on January 1, 2008, it joined with the nearby village of Innerferrera to create a new, larger municipality called Ferrera.

The Story of Ausserferrera
Ausserferrera was first written about in the mid-1100s. Back then, it was known as Farreira. For a long time, it was part of Innerferrera. But in 1837, it became its own separate town. Later, in 2008, it joined with Innerferrera again to form the new municipality of Ferrera.
Where is Ausserferrera Located?
Ausserferrera covers an area of about 31.5 square kilometers (about 12 square miles). A good part of this land, almost 30%, is used for farming. About 20% of the area is covered by forests. Only a tiny bit, less than 1%, has buildings or roads. The rest of the land, nearly half, is made up of mountains, rivers, or glaciers.
The village is found in the Schams sub-district. This area is part of the Hinterrhein district. Ausserferrera is located along a branch of the Rhine river. The village itself is a haufendorf, which means it's an old-fashioned village built in an unplanned way. Its buildings are quite close together around a central area.
Who Lives in Ausserferrera?
In 2007, Ausserferrera had a population of 46 people. All of them were Swiss citizens. Over the ten years before 2007, the number of people living there went down by about 24.6%.
In 2000, there were slightly more males (54.3%) than females (45.7%) in the village.

For a long time, until about 1950, almost everyone in Ausserferrera spoke Romansh. But today, most people speak German.
In 2000, most of the people (93.6%) spoke German. A small number of people also spoke French (2.1%) and Italian (2.1%).
