In basketball, Austin was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for his district. He was also a key player on the 2011 4A UIL Basketball State Championship team. This means his team won the state championship!

Austin was recognized as an Honorable Mention All-American by SI.com. This made him one of only 13 players from New Mexico State to ever earn All-American honors.
