Australopithecus bahrelghazali (say: Oss-trah-low-PITH-eh-kus bah-rel-gah-ZAH-lee) is an ancient human-like creature. It is a type of australopithecine, which are early relatives of humans. Scientists found its fossil remains in 1993.
A scientist named Michel Brunet discovered this important fossil. He is a paleontologist, which is a scientist who studies fossils to learn about life in the past. Brunet found the fossil in the Bahr el Ghazal valley. This area is near a place called Koro Toro in Chad, a country in Africa.
The fossil was given a special nickname: Abel. Scientists used a method called radiometric dating to find out how old Abel was. This method uses natural elements like beryllium to measure age. They found that Abel lived about 3.6 million years ago. This makes Australopithecus bahrelghazali one of the oldest known australopithecines.
