About Avenue Range
Avenue Range is a quiet area known for its farming. The land here is mostly used for agriculture, which means growing crops and raising animals. It's a key part of the local economy.
Traditional Owners
The original people who lived in this area were the Bungandidj (Boandik) people. They are the traditional owners of this land. They have a long history and connection to this region.
Early European Settlement
In 1843, a farmer named John ‘Jacky’ White arrived. He was the first European settler in Avenue Range. He took over a large area of land, about 134 square miles. This land included nearby places like Reedy Creek and Lucindale.
The Railway Line
Avenue Range used to be a stop on the Kingston-Naracoorte railway line. This railway was very important for the area. The first passenger train ran on September 1, 1876. Trains carried people and goods for many years. The last passenger train left on November 28, 1987. The railway served the community for 111 years.
Education in Avenue Range
The first school in Avenue Range was called Downer School. It was built south of the railway line. This school taught children from 1890 to 1901. A new school was then built on land owned by the Council of Education. This second school opened in 1901 and continued to operate until 1955.
Important Places
A special place in Avenue Range is the Cairnbank Homestead and Shearing Shed. A homestead is a main house on a farm, and a shearing shed is where sheep are shorn. This site is very old and important. It is listed on the South Australian Heritage Register. This means it is protected because of its historical value.
Government and Location
Avenue Range is part of several government areas. For federal elections, it is in the Division of Barker. For state elections, it is in the electoral district of MacKillop. Locally, it is managed by two councils: the Kingston District Council and the Naracoorte Lucindale Council. This helps manage local services and rules.
