History of Avon
How Avon Got Its Name
Avon was first settled in 1835 by Ira Woods and his family. The village was initially called "Woodsville" from 1837 to 1843. Later, its name changed to "Woodstock."
However, in 1852, the United States Postmaster General officially changed the name to "Avon." This was done to avoid confusion with another town named Woodstock in McHenry County, Illinois.
Avon and the Railroad
Avon used to be a very busy town, largely because of the railroad industry. The railroads helped transport cattle to meatpacking plants in Chicago. Avon also served as an important stop for trains traveling between Chicago and Quincy.
