Memorial to Feinberg

Avshalom Feinberg (born October 23, 1889 – died January 20, 1917) was a brave leader of a secret group called Nili. This group was a spy network in a region then known as Ottoman Palestine. They helped the British army during World War I against the Ottoman Empire.

Early Life and Family

Avshalom Feinberg was born in Gedera, a town in the Land of Israel. At that time, this land was part of the Ottoman Empire. His parents were Israel "Lolik" Feinberg and Fanny Feinberg. His father was one of the people who helped start important towns like Rishon LeZion, Hadera, and Tel Aviv.

Avshalom had two sisters named Tzila and Shoshanna. His family was very involved in building new communities. For example, his uncle, Joseph Feinberg, also helped found Rishon LeZion.

Joining the Nili Spy Network

Avshalom studied in France for a time. After his studies, he returned to work in Atlit. He joined Aaron Aaronsohn at an agricultural research station there.

When World War I began, Avshalom and the Aaronsohn family decided to act. Aaron Aaronsohn, his sister Sarah Aaronsohn, and their siblings formed a secret group. This group was called Nili. Their goal was to gather information for the British army. They wanted to help the British fight against the Ottoman Empire.

Secret Missions and Fate

In 1915, Avshalom Feinberg traveled to Egypt. There, he secretly met with the British Department of Naval Intelligence. He gave them important information.

In 1917, he made another journey to Egypt. He traveled on foot, a long and dangerous trip. Sadly, on his way back, he was likely killed. A group of Bedouins attacked him near Rafah, close to the British front line.

For many years, no one knew what happened to Avshalom. His fate was a mystery.

Discovery and Legacy

It was not until after the Six-Day War in 1967 that his remains were found. They were discovered under a palm tree in the Sinai desert. This palm tree had grown from date seeds that Avshalom had carried in his pocket.

In 1979, a new Israeli settlement was named after him. This settlement was called Avshalom and was located in the Sinai Peninsula. However, it was later abandoned in 1982. This happened after the Camp David Accords, a peace agreement.

But Avshalom's name lived on. In 1990, a new village in Israel was founded and also named Avshalom. This honored his memory and his brave actions.
