Awad Saud Awad (Arabic: عوض سعود عوض; born 1943) is a Palestinian writer and journalist. He has published 15 books. These include 3 novels, 10 story collections, and 2 books about Palestinian traditions and culture.
Life
Awad Saud Awad was born in 1943 in Jubb Yusuf, a village near Safad. This area was part of Mandatory Palestine at the time. In 1948, his family had to leave their home because of the war. They moved to Syria.
Awad Saud Awad lived in the Khan Al-Shih refugee camp. This camp was run by UNRWA, which helps Palestinian refugees. He studied at Damascus University and earned a degree in Art History in 1971.
In 1970, he married Mariam Al-Hamed. They lived in the Khan Al-Shih camp for three years. After the war of 1973, they moved to Joubar and later to Zamalka, near Damascus. They have two sons and three daughters.
Awad Saud Awad worked as a teacher for United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in Damascus from 1968 to 1996. He later left his job because of problems with how things were managed at UNRWA in Syria.
Career
Short stories and novels
Awad Saud Awad started writing in the 1970s. His first book for children, A Journey to Andromeda Galaxy, came out in 1981. Since 1981, he has been a member of the Palestinian Writers and Journalists Union in Damascus.
In 1989, he also joined the Arab Writers Union in Damascus. He was the president of the Association of Story and Novel in the Arab Writers Union for two terms: from 2005 to 2006, and again from 2009 to 2010. In 2008, he traveled to Turkey to study the history of storytelling in Syria.
In the field of folklore and heritage
Awad Saud Awad helped organize the Palestinian folklore week celebrations. These events took place every year in Damascus during the 1980s. He also supervised Palestinian Folklore Heritage artistic groups from 1988 to 1994.
He founded the Palestinian Folklore Heritage Center in Damascus. He was the director of this center from 1991 to 1996.
Awad Saud Awad is known as an important novelist in Palestine and Syria. He is also a respected critic of novels and stories in the Arab world today. He has written over 200 critical studies about different Arab writers. These studies have appeared in Arabic newspapers and magazines. He also has many publications about heritage in special magazines. He has given talks in different Syrian areas about stories and folklore.
