About Awad Saud Awad
Awad Saud Awad was born in 1943 in a place called Jubb Yusuf, near Safad, in what was then Mandatory Palestine.
Early Life and Moving to Syria
In 1948, when Awad was young, his family had to leave their home because of a war. They moved to Syria and lived in a refugee camp called Khan Al-Shih. This camp was run by UNRWA, an agency that helps Palestinian refugees.
Awad studied at Damascus University and earned a degree in Art History in 1971.
Family Life
In 1970, Awad married Mariam Al-Hamed, a Palestinian woman from Lebanon. They lived in the Khan Al-Shih camp for three years. After the war of 1973, they moved to Joubar and lived there for about six years. Later, they settled in Zamalka, a town near Damascus, with their five children. They have two sons and three daughters.
Working for UNRWA
Awad worked as a teacher for UNRWA in Damascus, Syria, from 1968 to 1996. He later left his job because he felt he was not treated well by the UNRWA administration in Syria.
Awad Saud Awad's Career
Writing Short Stories and Novels
Awad Saud Awad began his writing career in the 1970s. His first book for children, titled A Journey to Andromeda Galaxy, was published in 1981.
Since 1981, he has been a member of the Palestinian Writers and Journalists Union in Damascus, Syria. In 1989, he also joined the Arab Writers Union in Damascus. He served as the president of the Association of the Story and the Novel within the Arab Writers Union during 2005-2006 and again from 2009-2010. In June 2008, the Arab Writers Union sent him to Turkey to research the history of storytelling in Syria.
Work in Folklore and Heritage
Awad Saud Awad played an important role in organizing the Palestinian folklore week celebrations. These events were held every year in Damascus, Syria, during the 1980s. He also supervised Palestinian Folklore Heritage artistic groups from 1988 to 1994.
He founded the Palestinian Folklore Heritage Center in Damascus, Syria, and was its director from 1991 to 1996.
Awad Saud Awad is considered an important novelist in Palestine and Syria. He is also known as a leading critic of novels and stories in the modern Arab world. He has written more than 200 critical studies about Arab writers from different countries. These studies have been published in various Arabic newspapers and magazines. He has also published many articles about heritage in specialized magazines. He has given lectures in different Syrian provinces about storytelling and folklore.
