What's in a Name?
The name "AXA" is written in all capital letters by the company. But it's not an acronym, which means it doesn't stand for anything. The company chose this name because it's easy for people to say in almost any language.
In the 1980s, the company's leader, Claude Bébéar, wanted a new name. He wanted it to be short, catchy, and sound the same everywhere. He even used a computer to help find the perfect name! In 1985, he picked "AXA."
A Look at History
AXA started a long time ago, in 1816. Back then, it was called Mutuelle de L'assurance contre L'incendie, which means "Mutual Fire Insurance." Over the years, the company grew by joining with or buying other companies.
- In 1978, it became Mutuelles Unies.
- In 1982, it joined with the Drouot Group and was called Mutuelles Unies/Drouot.
- The company officially became "AXA" in 1986.
AXA continued to grow by acquiring other large insurance companies. For example, it bought The Equitable in 1991 and Union des Assurances De Paris (UAP) in 1996. UAP was France's biggest insurer at the time. After that, the company was briefly known as Axa-UAP, but it changed back to just "AXA" in 1999.
In 2006, AXA bought the Winterthur Group from Credit Suisse. More recently, in 2018, AXA acquired XL Group Ltd., which is a company that provides insurance for businesses. In 2019, AXA sold its bank in Belgium to another company called Crelan.
AXA also makes decisions about where it invests its money. For example, in 2016, the company decided to stop investing in tobacco companies. By August 2024, AXA had also stopped investing in certain Israeli banks. In 2023, AXA Investment Managers bought a film studio and its land in France.
Where AXA is Headquartered
AXA's main office is in Paris, France. It's located in a beautiful old building from the 1700s called Hotel de La Vaupalière. AXA bought this building in the late 1990s. An architect named Ricardo Bofill designed a modern glass building that connects to the old hotel, creating AXA's current headquarters.
