Ayabaca is a town located high up in the Piura Region of northwestern Peru. It's very close to the border with Ecuador. This town is the main city of the Ayabaca Province and the Ayabaca District. It sits southeast of Macará, an Ecuadorian town across the border.
Ayabaca is nestled in the Andes mountains, high above the Piura Desert. It's about 2,815 meters (9,236 feet) above sea level. The town is famous for its "Señor Cautivo" festival. Many people travel from different parts of northern Peru and even Ecuador to attend this special event. In 1975, about 10,000 people lived in Ayabaca.

Ayabaca's Weather: A Mountain Climate
Ayabaca has a special kind of mountain weather called a subtropical highland climate. This means the temperatures are usually mild all year round. However, there's a clear difference between its dry and wet seasons.

The weather in Ayabaca stays pretty steady throughout the year. There aren't huge changes in temperature from month to month. On average, the highest temperature during the year is about 18.2°C (64.8°F). The average lowest temperature is around 10.1°C (50.2°F).
Rainfall: Wet and Dry Seasons
Ayabaca gets a lot of rain each year, about 1,300 millimeters (51 inches) in total. Most of this rain falls during the wet season, which lasts from December to May. March is usually the rainiest month, getting over 300 millimeters (12 inches) of rain on average.
The dry season runs from June to September. During these months, there's very little rain. July and August are the driest times of the year in Ayabaca.
