History of the Theatre
The idea for this theatre came from old national holidays and dances. These events often had parts that felt like a play.
The first professional Azerbaijani play happened on 10 March 1873. It was a comedy called "Vizier of Lankaran Khanate." Hasan bey Zardabi helped students from the Real School of Baku put on this play. It was written by Mirza Fatali Akhundov.
In 1919, different acting groups came together. This is when the theatre officially became a state-recognized theatre.
Over the years, the theatre had many different names. Some of these names were "State Theatre" and "Azerbaijani Turkic Drama Theatre." From 1923 to 1933, it was named after Dadash Bunyatzade. Then, from 1933 to 1991, it was named after Meshadi Azizbekov. Finally, in 1991, it got its current name: the "Azerbaijan State Academic Drama Theatre."

This theatre has been very successful for a long time. During the Soviet era, it won many awards for its great work.
