Azogues is an important city in Ecuador. It is the capital of Azogues Canton and Cañar Province. The city is known for its beautiful views and interesting history.
About 35,763 people live in Azogues. It sits high up, at 2,518 meters (8,261 feet) above sea level. The weather is usually mild, with an average temperature of 17 °C (63 °F).
A cool fact about Azogues is its famous Panama hat industry. Even though they are called "Panama hats," many are actually made here! These hats are mostly sold to other countries.
The city was founded a long time ago, on October 4, 1562. It was started by a person named Gil Ramirez Davalos. Azogues was first part of a larger area called Cuenca. Later, in 1775, it became its own parish.
Religion in Azogues
The main church in Azogues is the San Francisco Cathedral. This cathedral is the center of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Azogues. A diocese is like a special church district. This one was created in 1968. It used to be part of the larger Archdiocese of Cuenca.
Getting Around Azogues
Azogues is easy to reach by land. It is well connected to the city of Cuenca by a fast road. This road is currently being made wider to have six lanes.
You can also get to Quito and Guayaquil from Azogues. These cities are connected by major highways. These highways are part of the Pan-American Highway system.
For air travel, Azogues uses the Mariscal Lamar Regional Airport. This airport is located in the nearby city of Cuenca.
Azogues is the capital of the Cañar Province. It is also the second largest city in the Cuenca Metropolitan Area. This whole area has about 700,000 people.
