The Story of Bæjarins Beztu
This hot dog chain has been open since 1937. The very first stand was set up on Austurstræti street, right in the middle of Reykjavík. The current owner, Guðrún Kristmundsdóttir, is the granddaughter of the person who started it all.
Moving to a New Spot
In the 1960s, the main hot dog stand moved. It went two streets north to a place called Tryggvagata. This new spot is right across from the Harpa Concert Hall. The main stand is still there today, serving up its famous hot dogs.
Famous Visitors and Awards
In August 2004, a very famous person visited the stand: former United States president Bill Clinton. He was in Iceland for a UNICEF conference. His visit made the hot dog stand even more popular. It started appearing in many tourism guidebooks about Iceland.
Just two years later, in August 2006, a big British newspaper called The Guardian gave Bæjarins Beztu a special award. They named it the best hot dog stand in all of Europe!
