Bürglen is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the canton of Uri in Switzerland. It is well-known for being the legendary home of William Tell, a famous Swiss folk hero.

History of Bürglen
Bürglen has a long history! It was first written about in the year 857. Back then, it was called Burgilla. Later, in 1240, its name changed slightly to Burgelon.
Geography of Bürglen
Bürglen covers an area of about 53.1 square kilometers (20.5 square miles). A big part of this land, about 51.4%, is used for farming. Forests cover almost 20% of the area.
The town itself is built on only a small part of the land, about 2.1%. The rest, about 26.6%, is made up of natural features like rivers, glaciers, and mountains.
Where is Bürglen Located?
Bürglen is found southeast of Altdorf. It sits right at the entrance of the beautiful Schächental valley. The village is also where the road over the Klausenpass begins. This mountain pass connects the canton of Uri with the canton of Glarus.
The main part of Bürglen village is located above the left bank of the Schächen river. However, there are also many smaller settlements spread out. These settlements stretch from the valley floor all the way up the mountains to an elevation of about 1,700 meters (5,577 feet).
