The BNY Mellon Center is a very tall building, called a skyscraper, in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It stands at 500 Grant Street. This amazing building is 725 ft (221 m) tall. It has 55 floors!
The BNY Mellon Center is the second-tallest building in Pittsburgh. It was announced in 1980 and finished in June 1984. When it first opened, it was called One Mellon Center. This was because Mellon Financial Corporation used it as their main office.
In 2007, Mellon Financial joined with Bank of New York. They formed a new company called The Bank of New York Mellon. This new company still uses the building for its offices. In 2008, the building got its current name, BNY Mellon Center.
Cool Features of the Building
The BNY Mellon Center has some special features. It has an eight-sided shape. The roof is a unique mansard roof, which means it slopes on all sides. There is even a heliport on the very top! This is a place where helicopters can land.
This skyscraper is one of the tallest in the world. It is also the building with the highest value in Allegheny County. You can sometimes see the building from far away. On clear days, it can be spotted from about 50 miles away. This is usually from the top of Chestnut Ridge.
Building History
For many years, the land where the BNY Mellon Center stands was home to the Carlton Hotel. In the early 1980s, U.S. Steel bought this land. They planned to build a 54-floor skyscraper there. U.S. Steel's own headquarters, the U.S. Steel Tower, is just one block away.
The building was first meant to be the main office for a company called Dravo Corporation. However, Dravo was bought by another company in 1983. So, U.S. Steel sold the almost-finished skyscraper. It was sold to a group called 500 Grant Street Partners. This was one of the biggest real estate sales in Western Pennsylvania at the time.
In March 2010, new signs were put on the rooftop. These signs replaced the old Mellon logo. They showed the company's new triangular logo and the name "BNY Mellon." This change was finished by the end of 2010.
