BOH Plantations was started in 1929 by J. A. Russell. He was a British businessman who came to Malaya when he was seven years old in 1890. Before starting BOH, Russell worked in other businesses. He learned to speak several Chinese dialects and Malay. This helped him make friends with important people.

History of BOH Tea

BOH was founded in 1929, during a very difficult time called the Great Depression. This was a period when many people around the world lost their jobs and money. Even with these challenges, J. A. Russell believed that people would always want tea. He was very hopeful about starting a tea plantation.

Russell was given land for the first BOH tea garden in Habu. This was also the first tea garden in the Cameron Highlands. At that time, the land was wild jungle. It had very steep slopes. Workers used special machines and strong animals like mules to clear the land. They carefully shaped the hills into the stepped tea gardens you see today.

As of 2016, BOH Plantations owns four different tea gardens. These are the original Habu garden, Fairlie Tea Garden, Sungai Palas Tea Garden, and Bukit Cheeding in Selangor. There is also a factory near the main garden where the tea is packaged. Visitors can even take tours of the factory to see how tea is made.

All four of these plantations together cover about 1,200 hectares of land. That's a huge area! Every year, they produce about 4 million kilograms of tea. This means BOH makes about 70% of all the tea grown in Malaysia.
