Baan Baa, pronounced "barn-bar", is a small village in northern New South Wales, Australia. It is located inland, meaning it's not on the coast. Baan Baa is part of the Narrabri Shire local government area and Pottinger County.
You can find Baan Baa about 38 kilometres (24 miles) south-east of Narrabri and 58 kilometres (36 miles) north-west of Gunnedah. It sits right on the Kamilaroi Highway, a main road in the area. In 2006, about 211 people lived in Baan Baa.
History of Baan Baa
The name Baan Baa comes from a local property. It means "place of baan" in the Gamilaraay language. Baan is a type of mistletoe plant. The Gamilaraay are the traditional Aboriginal people of this land.
The railway line reached Baan Baa on 1 October 1882. The Baan Baa railway station opened soon after, in 1883. The village also had a Post Office, which opened on 9 February 1885. It closed many years later, on 19 March 1988.
The Baan Baa Literary Institute building was built in 1923. It was made from local cypress pine wood. Today, this building serves as the community hall. Long ago, Baan Baa was a busy railway village. It even had its own bakery, butcher shop, and service station. The village was also known for having the longest railway platform in country New South Wales. Now, it mainly works as a place where grain is loaded onto trains.
What Baan Baa Does Today
Baan Baa is a key spot for farmers in the area. It's where wheat and barley from nearby farms are brought. These farms are in places like Harparary, Maules Creek, and Turrawan.
Other important farm products from the area include beef cattle and prime lamb. Farmers also grow cotton here. Recently, coal mining has become a big industry around Baan Baa. There is also more exploration for natural gas in the nearby Pilliga Scrub.
Fun and Community
Baan Baa has a strong love for sports. The village teams up with Maules Creek to play Cricket in the Boggabri competition. They also have tennis competitions.
The Railway Hotel is a central meeting place for the community. It's especially busy during the harvest season, which is usually in November and December. People also attend church services regularly at the local church.
