Baandee is a small town in the Wheatbelt area of Western Australia. It's located about halfway between the towns of Kellerberrin and Merredin. You can find it along the Great Eastern Highway. Baandee is about 230 kilometres (143 mi) from Perth, which is the capital city of Western Australia.
A Look Back: Baandee's History
Baandee officially became a town in April 1912. The name "Baandee" comes from the Aboriginal language. There's some discussion about its exact meaning. However, one early settler mentioned that the Aboriginal name for Hines Hill, a place about 8 kilometres (5 mi) to the east, was "Baandui."
In 1932, the Wheat Pool of Western Australia made an important announcement. They said that Baandee would get two new wheat elevators. These elevators would be placed on two large wheat bins at the railway siding. Each elevator would have its own engine. The first elevator was finished and ready to use early the next year. This helped farmers store and move their wheat more easily.
