Backoo is a small, unincorporated community in Pembina County, North Dakota. It is located in Advance Township. An unincorporated community means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.
Backoo is about five miles northwest of Cavalier. It began in 1887 as a small settlement. It was built along the tracks of the Great Northern Railroad. Railroads were very important for travel and trade back then!

Backoo's Post Office
A post office opened in Backoo on September 26, 1887. This was a big deal for the community! It stayed open for over 100 years. The post office finally closed on October 11, 1988. It had its own ZIP code: 58215. Today, people in Backoo get their mail from the nearby town of Cavalier.
How Backoo Got Its Name
One of the first people to settle there was John Mountain. Some say he named Backoo after the Barcoo River in Australia. That's where he came from! However, other stories suggest the name came from Baku. Baku is a city in Azerbaijan on the Caspian Sea.
