Bad Doberan is a district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. It's like a county or a region that includes several towns and villages. The city of Rostock is very close to Bad Doberan. In fact, the district completely surrounds Rostock, but Rostock itself is a separate city.

In the Middle Ages, this area became wealthy because it was near Rostock, an important city of the Hanseatic League. The Hanseatic League was a powerful group of trading cities in Northern Europe. They helped make the region rich through trade.

Later, in 1793, a special bathing resort called Heiligendamm was started. Today, Heiligendamm is part of Bad Doberan. This made the region a popular summer spot for the dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, who were like local rulers.

The district we know today was formed in 1994. Before that, in 1952, there were two smaller districts: Bad Doberan and Rostock-Land. They joined together to create the current district.

What the Coat of Arms Means

The coat of arms is like a special symbol for the Bad Doberan district. It tells a story about its history and importance.

  • The griffin is a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. It comes from the coat of arms of Rostock. This shows how important the city of Rostock has been for the district.
  • The bull's head comes from the arms of the old duchy of Mecklenburg. A duchy was a territory ruled by a duke. This symbol connects the district to its historical roots in Mecklenburg.
  • The clerical staff looks like a shepherd's crook. It represents the very old and famous Cistercian monastery in Bad Doberan. Monasteries were important religious and cultural centers in the past.
