Discovering Bad Liebenwerda's Past
The first time Bad Liebenwerda was written about was in the year 1231. Back then, it was called Lievenwerde. The name means "lovely island" or "high place in water." This is because "Lieb" means "lovely" or "life," and "werde" means "island."
In those old records, people like Otto of Ileburg, who was a local administrator (called a Vogt), and Walterus, a priest (called a Plebanus), were mentioned.
Bad Liebenwerda has a cool old moated castle. This castle has a tall tower called the Lubwartturm. The town was first officially called a "city" in 1304. For a long time, Bad Liebenwerda was part of a powerful area called the Electorate of Saxony. Later, it became part of the Kingdom of Prussia in 1815. This happened after a big meeting called the Congress of Vienna.
The town became a health spa in 1905. Because of its healing waters, the word "Bad" was added to its name in 1925. "Bad" means "bath" or "spa" in German. From 1952 to 1990, Bad Liebenwerda was part of East Germany.
How Many People Live Here?
The number of people living in Bad Liebenwerda has changed a lot over the years. For example, in 1875, about 7,715 people lived there. By 1946, after World War II, the population grew to over 14,500. More recently, in 2020, about 9,224 people called Bad Liebenwerda home.
Exploring Culture and Buildings
Bad Liebenwerda has some interesting old buildings and cultural spots.
The Gothic church of St. Nikolai is one of them. Its tower had to be rebuilt in the late 1800s. This happened after lightning hit it and caused a fire.
The Lubwartturm is the oldest building in town. It was built around 1207 as part of the old moated castle. Right next to this tower, you'll find a museum. This museum has exhibits about a famous composer named Carl Heinrich Graun and his brothers. It also has a fun display of Marionettes and other puppets. You can learn about puppeteers from southeast Germany there.
