Bad Medicine Lake is a special lake in Becker County, Minnesota. It gets its water from underground springs. This lake got its unique name from early Native Americans. They thought a lake without rivers flowing in or out was a strange place. They called it "bad medicine" and avoided hunting or fishing there.

Discover Bad Medicine Lake

Bad Medicine Lake is located in Forest Township. It is about five miles long. The lake is also about half a mile wide. Its deepest parts can reach up to 90 feet (27 meters).

Clear Waters and Fish

The lake is famous for its very clear and cold water. It's a popular spot for rainbow trout fishing. Over the last 35 years, the types of fish living here have changed a lot. In the 1950s and 1960s, it was known for bass and panfish.

Now, the lake is mostly managed for rainbow trout and walleye. In 1977, the DNR changed Bad Medicine Lake into a trout lake. This happened after a lot of native crayfish appeared. These crayfish ate the plants that bass and panfish needed to live.

About 16,000 rainbow trout are added to the lake every year. These include special kinds like Kamloops and Madison strains.
