Baden Chapman Teague was born on 18 September 1944. He is an Australian politician who used to be a Senator for South Australia. He was a member of the Liberal Party. He served in the Australian Parliament from 1977 until 1996.

Early Life and Education

Baden Teague was born in Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia. He went to school at St. Peter’s College. After school, he studied at the University of Adelaide.

He then went on to study at Cambridge University in England. There, he earned a Ph.D., which is a very high university degree. Before becoming a politician, he worked as a university lecturer.

Becoming a Senator

Baden Teague became a Senator in the Australian Senate in 1977. A Senator is a person elected to represent their state or territory in the Australian Parliament. He won the last Senate spot for South Australia.

He won against a new political group called the Australian Democrats. This happened because of how votes were counted. Votes from another small party helped Baden Teague win his seat.

Working for a Republic

During his time as a Senator, Baden Teague wanted to change Australia's system of government. Australia is a Constitutional Monarchy. This means the King or Queen of the United Kingdom is also Australia's head of state.

Baden Teague wanted Australia to become a Republic. In a republic, the head of state is usually a president, not a monarch. He introduced a special bill to try and make this change happen.

After Politics

After he retired from being a Senator in 1996, Baden Teague continued to work for his ideas. He became the chairman for South Australia of the Australian Republican Movement. This group wants Australia to become a republic.

He was also chosen to be a delegate at the Australian Republic Convention. This was a big meeting where people discussed if Australia should become a republic and how it would work.
