Baerami is a small place, also known as a 'locality', in the Muswellbrook Shire. It is located in the Upper Hunter area of New South Wales, Australia.
The Bylong Valley Way is a road that goes through Baerami. It crosses over Baerami Creek using a bridge called Kirks Bridge. Further down, Baerami Creek joins up with the Goulburn River.
History of Baerami
The land where Baerami is today has a long history. It is the traditional home of the Wonnarua people. They have lived there for many, many years.
The name 'Baerami' comes from a very large piece of land. This land was divided into smaller parts in 1926. A big house called 'Baerami House' was built there in 1875. It is still standing today. The name 'Baerami' probably comes from an Aboriginal word. It is thought to mean 'a spear thrower'.
What is Oil Shale?
Baerami is known for a special type of rock called oil shale. This rock contains oil that can be taken out and used. The oil shale deposit near Baerami was thought to be the biggest in New South Wales. It was even twice as large as another famous oil shale site at Glen Davis.
However, the place where people actually mined this oil shale is not exactly in Baerami. It is about 25 kilometers (about 15 miles) south of Baerami. This mining site is located on Baerami Creek, in a nearby area called Baerami Creek.
