Bajram Begaj (born 20 March 1967) is an Albanian politician and a former military officer. He has been the President of Albania since 2022. Before becoming president, he had a long career in the Albanian army. He was the 26th Chief of General Staff of the Albanian Armed Forces from July 2020 to June 2022. He is an independent politician. In June 2022, the Socialist Party nominated him to become president.

Bajram Begaj's Journey
Growing Up and Joining the Army
Bajram Begaj was born on March 20, 1967, in Rrogozhinë, Albania. He studied at the Faculty of Medicine in Tirana. He graduated in 1989. In 1998, he became a medical officer in the army. He later earned a special degree and became an "Associate Professor" in Medicine.
During his 31 years in the military, Begaj learned many skills. He took part in training courses about security and defense. He also studied advanced medicine and hospital management. He even took a course on strategic medical leadership in the United States. He also studied medicine and health in Greece.
Begaj held many important jobs in the Albanian Armed Forces. He was the leader of the Military Medical Unit. He also directed the Military Hospital. In July 2020, he became the Chief of the General Staff of the Albanian Armed Forces. This is a very high position in the military.
Becoming President
On July 24, 2022, Bajram Begaj became the new president of Albania. He will serve for five years. The process to choose a new president started in May 2022. The parliament of Albania had to agree on a candidate.
The main political party, the Socialist Party, chose Begaj as their candidate. This happened on June 3, 2022. Before this, he resigned from his military role. He was elected with 78 votes. This was more than enough votes to win. The other main party, the Democratic Party, did not vote.
As president, Begaj works to improve Albania's relationships with other countries. He also helps Albania become closer to European and Atlantic countries. He has traveled to many countries to meet with leaders. These trips help Albania become more important on the world stage.
