History of Bajura Afuera
Becoming Part of the United States
The island of Puerto Rico was once controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain and the United States signed an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. This treaty meant that Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States.
Early Population Records
Soon after, in 1899, the United States government conducted a count of all the people living in Puerto Rico. This was like a big survey to find out how many people lived in each area. The count showed that 739 people lived in the Bajura Afuera community at that time.
