Bakartxo Tejeria Otermin (born 28 March 1971) is an important politician from the Basque Country, Spain. She has been the speaker, or President, of the Basque Parliament since 2012. She is the third woman to hold this high position. She has also served as the speaker for the longest time. Tejeria has been a member of the Basque Parliament for Gipuzkoa since 2001. She is part of the Basque National Party.

Life and Political Career
Bakartxo Tejeria Otermin was born in San Sebastian, a city in Gipuzkoa. She lived for a short time in Larraul before moving to Villabona as a child. Both towns are in Gipuzkoa.
Early Career and Local Politics
Tejeria studied law at the University of the Basque Country. After finishing her studies, she worked as a lawyer in Tolosa. From 1997 to 1999, she also worked as a justice of the peace in Villabona.
In the 1990s, she joined the Basque National Party. In 1999, she was elected as a town councillor for Villabona. She became the mayor of Villabona in 2003 and served until 2007. After the 2007 election, she did not win enough votes to be mayor again. She continued to serve as a councillor in the opposition until 2011.
Becoming a Member of Parliament
Tejeria became a well-known member of the Basque National Party in the Basque Parliament. She was first elected in 2001. As a member of the Women and Youth committee, she helped create the 2005 Equality Law. This law aimed to make things fairer for everyone.
She was re-elected to the parliament in 2005. In 2008, she became a high-ranking member of her party. She joined the party's Executive Branch in Gipuzkoa (GBB). After the 2009 election, her party was in the opposition. Tejeria was then in charge of coordinating her party's group in the Basque Parliament.
Leading the Basque Parliament
Before the 2012 election, the Basque National Party chose Tejeria as their candidate for the speaker of the Basque Parliament. Her party won the election. On 20 November 2012, she was elected as the seventh speaker of the Basque Parliament.
She was re-elected as speaker after the 2016 and 2020 elections. This made her the first speaker to serve for three terms. She was re-elected again after the 2024 election for a fourth term. Tejeria is also the longest-serving member of parliament in the current term.
Tejeria is part of the social democrat side of her party. This means she believes in social fairness and equality. She also supports the idea of the Basque Country having more say in its own future. She has taken part in events to support the Basque Country's right to decide its own path.
Personal Life
Bakartxo Tejeria is married to Joanes Labaien. He is a lawyer. His father, Ramon Labaien, was a Minister of Culture for the Basque Government and mayor of San Sebastian in the 1980s.
Bakartxo and Joanes have four children. They have two daughters, born in 2005 and 2009. They also have twin sons, born in 2016. The family lives in San Sebastian.
