Bakartxo Tejeria Otermin (born on March 28, 1971) is an important politician from the Basque Country in Spain. She has been the speaker, or President, of the Basque Parliament since 2012. This means she leads the meetings and represents the parliament. She is the third woman to hold this position and has served the longest as speaker. Bakartxo Tejeria has also been a member of the Basque Parliament for Gipuzkoa since 2001. She is part of the Basque National Party.

Bakartxo Tejeria's Early Life and Education
Bakartxo Tejeria Otermin was born in San Sebastián, a city in Gipuzkoa. When she was a child, her family moved to Villabona, which is also in Gipuzkoa. She studied law at the University of the Basque Country. After finishing her studies, she worked as a lawyer in Tolosa. She also served as a justice of the peace in Villabona from 1997 to 1999.
Starting a Career in Politics
Bakartxo Tejeria joined the Basque National Party in the 1990s. Her political journey began when she was elected as a town councillor for Villabona in 1999. In the 2003 local elections, her party won, and she became the mayor of Villabona. She served as mayor from 2003 to 2007. After the 2007 elections, she continued to serve as a councillor, but her party was in the opposition until 2011.
Becoming a Member of Parliament
Tejeria became a well-known member of the Basque National Party in the Basque Parliament. She was first elected in the 2001 regional election. As part of the Women and Youth parliamentary committee, she helped create the 2005 Equality Law. This law aimed to make things fairer for everyone. She was re-elected in the 2005 election.
In 2008, she became a high-ranking member of her party. She joined the party's Executive Branch of Gipuzkoa (GBB). After the 2009 election, when her party was in the opposition, she helped coordinate their group in the Basque Parliament.
Leading the Basque Parliament
Before the 2012 election, the Basque National Party chose Bakartxo Tejeria as their candidate for the presidency of the Basque Parliament. After her party won, she was elected as the seventh speaker, or President, of the Basque Parliament on November 20, 2012.
She was re-elected after the 2016, 2020, and 2024 elections. This made her the first speaker to serve for four terms, which is a big achievement! She is also the longest-serving member of parliament during the current parliamentary term.
Bakartxo Tejeria supports ideas that are both social democratic and in favor of the Basque Country having more control over its own future. She believes the Basque Country should have the right to choose its own path.
Bakartxo Tejeria's Family Life
Bakartxo Tejeria is married to Joanes Labaien. They have two daughters, born in 2005 and 2009, and twin sons, born in 2016. The family lives in San Sebastian.
