A Look at Baker's History
Baker started as a small village built around a railway. It was named after Lester H. Baker, a farmer who later moved to the state of Washington. The first settlers arrived in this area in 1879.
The important Great Northern Railway came through Baker in 1880. This made it easier for people and goods to travel. The very first building in Baker was constructed in 1883 by John Erikson. He used it to store grain, which was a very important crop for farmers in the area.
In 1903, the railroad asked for the local post office's name to be changed. It was originally called Navan, but they wanted it renamed Baker to honor Lester Baker.
