Baker Island has some interesting neighbors. To its northwest, you'll find Noyes Island. Directly to the north is Lulu Island. Across Bucareli Bay to the southeast, you can see Suemez Island.

Smaller islands like San Juan Bautista Island and St. Ignace Island are located between Baker Island and Prince of Wales Island. The closest town to Baker Island is Craig, which is on Prince of Wales Island.

History of Baker Island

The first European person to ever see Baker Island was a man named Aleksei Chirikov. He spotted the island way back in 1741.

How Baker Island Got Its Name

Much later, in 1879, the island was officially named. A person named William Healy Dall from the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey gave it the name "Baker Island." He named it after Marcus Baker, who lived from 1849 to 1903.
