St Ignace Island (which is Île Saint-Ignace in French) is a large island located in the northern part of Lake Superior. This lake is one of the five Great Lakes in North America. St Ignace Island is part of Ontario, Canada.
It is a very big island! It is the eleventh-largest lake island in the whole world. Its area is about 274 square kilometers (106 square miles). In Lake Superior, it is the second-largest island, right after Isle Royale. When you look at all the islands in the Great Lakes, St Ignace Island is the fifth largest. Only Manitoulin, Isle Royale, St. Joseph Island, and Drummond Island are bigger.
St Ignace Island does not have any people living on it. It is found close to the northern shore of Lake Superior. It sits at the entrance to a part of the lake called Nipigon Bay, in Northern Ontario.

Island's Name and History
The name "St Ignace Island" comes from the French language. It was named by Jesuit missionaries. These missionaries were a group of religious people. They named the island to honor their founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola.
The island was clearly shown on an old map from 1669. This map was called "Lac Tracy ou Superieur avec les dependances de la Mission du Saint Esprit." It was drawn by Claude-Jean Allouez and Jacques Marquette.
Where is St Ignace Island?
St Ignace Island is separated from a large piece of land called the Black Bay peninsula by the Nipigon Strait. Another island, Simpson Island, is located right next to St Ignace Island.
The closest town to the island is Red Rock, Ontario. It is about 20 kilometers (12 miles) away.
Mount St Ignace: The Island's Peak
The highest point on St Ignace Island is called Mount St Ignace. This mountain is the tallest point on any island in Lake Superior. It reaches 565 meters (1,854 feet) above sea level. While it's the highest island point, it's not the highest point in Northern Ontario. For example, the Ishpatina Ridge is 693 meters (2,274 feet) tall, making it the highest point in all of Ontario.
