Bakwan is a yummy vegetable fritter from Indonesian cuisine. Think of it as a crispy, deep-fried pancake filled with fresh veggies! You can often find bakwan sold by friendly street vendors all over Indonesia.
The main ingredients are usually beansprouts, shredded cabbage, and carrots. These veggies are mixed into a special batter and then deep-fried until golden brown and crispy. In some parts of Indonesia, like West Java, people call bakwan 'bala-bala'. In Semarang, it's known as 'badak'. Bakwan is a bit like Japanese yasai tempura or Filipino ukoy.
Different Kinds of Bakwan
Most bakwan are made with vegetables. But there's a special kind called 'bakwan udang'. This version adds whole shrimp to the batter, making it extra tasty! You can often find 'bakwan udang' at snack stands in marketplaces.
Sometimes, the word 'bakwan' is used for other fritters too. For example, Indonesian corn fritters are often called 'bakwan jagung'. They are also known as 'perkedel jagung'.
In East Java, bakwan can mean something quite different! There, 'bakwan' often refers to fried wontons. These wontons have a yummy filling, usually ground meat or fish mixed with flour. They are wrapped in wonton skin and then fried. This kind of bakwan is often served in a warm, soupy broth with tofu, noodles, and meatballs. It's very similar to bakso meatball soup. This dish is commonly known as 'Bakwan Malang' or 'Bakwan Surabaya'. These names come from the cities where they are popular: Malang and Surabaya in East Java.
Bakwan originally came from Chinese recipes. Other popular Indonesian foods with Chinese roots include Bakpao (a type of meat bun), Bakso (meatballs), Bakmie (meat noodles), and Bakpia (a sweet pastry).
