Perkedel are yummy fried snacks from Indonesia. They are a type of fritter, which means they are made from a batter and then deep-fried. The most common perkedel are made from mashed potatoes.
But there are many other popular kinds too! You can find perkedel jagung (made with corn) and perkedel tahu (made with tofu). Some even have minced fish. In most of Indonesia, it's called perkedel. However, in the Javanese language, and in Malaysia and Singapore, it's often called begedil. This might mean that people from Java brought this tasty fried food to Malaysia and Singapore.
Where Did Perkedel Come From?
Perkedel is thought to have come from a Dutch dish called frikadeller. The Netherlands used to have a strong connection with Indonesia a long time ago. Frikadeller are actually meatballs or dishes made from minced meat from Denmark.
But here's the interesting part: unlike frikadeller, perkedel doesn't usually have meat as its main ingredient. Instead, it's mostly made from mashed potato.
What Are Perkedel Made Of?
To make perkedel, potato slices are usually deep-fried or baked first. This is better than boiling them, which can make the perkedel too soft. The fried, mashed potato is then mixed with other ingredients. Sometimes, ground meat or corned beef is added, but often perkedel has little or no meat at all.
Next, chopped scallions are mixed in. The mixture is seasoned with white pepper powder. Then, it's shaped into flat, round patties. Before frying, these patties are dipped in egg yolk or beaten egg. Finally, they are deep-fried until golden and crispy.
Besides potatoes, perkedel can also be made with other yummy things. These include cabe rawit (small chili peppers), shrimp, peeled corn, or mashed tofu.

How to Enjoy Perkedel
Perkedel is a very popular dish in Indonesia. You can eat it as a side dish with your main meal or as a tasty appetizer before your meal. In Indonesia, perkedel is often served with nasi kuning (yellow rice) as part of a special dish called tumpeng. It's also commonly eaten with soto ayam (a type of chicken soup) or a simple sayur sop (vegetable and chicken soup).
