The Story of Balfours Bakery
How Balfours Started
Balfours began a long time ago in 1853. A Scottish immigrant named James Calder and Margaret Balfour opened a bakery. It was located at 130 Rundle Street in Adelaide, Australia.
Growing Bigger and Better
James Calder's bakery became very popular. In 1872, he opened a new place called the City Steam Biscuit Factory. It was on Twin Street in Adelaide. Balfours became a well-known name. In 1867, Prince Alfred, the Duke of Edinburgh, visited South Australia. James Calder was chosen to be the official biscuit baker for the royal visit!
Around that time, James Calder's nephew, John Balfour, joined the business. The company then started trading as Calder & Balfour.
Changes Over Time
Margaret Balfour passed away on November 1, 1887. James Calder passed away two years later, on October 1, 1889, at 71 years old.
In the 1890s, a new factory was built near Carrington Street. This helped the company make even more delicious treats.
Expanding to Cafes
From 1914, Balfours started to grow their business even more. They opened cake shops, cafes, and tearooms. They bought Jackman's Grand Cafe on King William Street. This place became known as Balfour's Cafe. It was a popular spot in Adelaide for 50 years.
Later, the company changed its name to Balfour Wauchope Pty Ltd. This was to honor Charles Wauchope, who was the chairman and helped the company a lot.
Moving and New Owners
In 2001, the government helped Balfours move its main baking factory. It moved from Morphett Street to Dudley Park. Even with this help, the company had some money problems.
In 2008, the San Remo Macaroni Company bought Balfours. This helped the bakery continue making its popular products.
As of 2018, Balfours has a second factory. It is located in Milperra in Sydney. This means they can make even more pies and cakes for people to enjoy!
