Discovering Balgownie: A Suburb of Wollongong
Balgownie is mostly a place where people live, with a small shopping area known as Balgownie Village. The main road, Balgownie Road, connects the suburb to the nearby Princes Highway. This makes it easy to get around.
Where is Balgownie Located?
Balgownie is found to the north-west of the main part of Wollongong. It stretches from the lower parts of Mount Keira up to the base of a rocky area called Broker's Nose. To the east, Balgownie is next to Fairy Meadow, which has some businesses and factories.
A Look at Balgownie's Past
Balgownie has a history similar to many towns along the south coast of New South Wales. When it was first settled in the 1800s, it was a busy center for:
- Logging (cutting down trees)
- Coal mining (digging for coal)
- Farming (growing crops and raising animals)
As the 1900s arrived, Wollongong grew bigger. Balgownie changed from a small country village into a residential suburb. This means more houses were built as the city expanded.
What Makes Balgownie Special?
Balgownie is a diverse suburb where many different types of families live. You can find everything from public housing to large homes. One interesting place to visit is the museum at Balgownie Public School.
The area is also famous for its sports history. It is home to the oldest active soccer club in Australia, the Balgownie Rangers. This club was started way back in 1883!
