Bancroft is a small community located in Portage County, Wisconsin, United States. It is considered an unincorporated area, meaning it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. However, it is also a census-designated place, which helps the government collect important population data.
In 2010, about 535 people lived in Bancroft. This community is part of the larger Stevens Point, Wisconsin, area.
History of Bancroft
Bancroft was named after a person named Warren Gamaliel Bancroft. He was a soldier in the 42nd Wisconsin Regiment during the American Civil War. Later, he became a pastor at the Oshkosh Methodist Church.
Interestingly, Warren Gamaliel Bancroft was also the namesake for Warren Gamaliel Bancroft Winnipeg Harding. This person is better known as Warren G. Harding, who became the 29th president of the United States. A post office first opened in Bancroft on May 17, 1876.
Where is Bancroft Located?
Bancroft is found in the middle part of Wisconsin. It is about 10 miles south of a place called Plover. It is also about five miles north of Plainfield.
You can find Bancroft on Portage County Road W. This road is just east of Interstate 39 and U.S. Highway 51, near exit 143. The community is the main spot for the Town of Pine Grove. Bancroft covers an area of about 5.040 square miles. Most of this area, 5.030 square miles, is land. Only a tiny part, 0.010 square miles, is water.
Interesting Landforms in Bancroft
The land around Bancroft is mostly flat. However, there are two cool bluffs, which are like steep hills, that stand out.
One of these bluffs was very large and often called Mosquito Bluff. It runs from east to west. Today, Mosquito Bluff is split into two big hills by Harding Road.
The other special landform is known as The Ledge. This bluff goes towards the northeast and you can see it from Interstate 39. The Ledge has had many names over time, like Lover's Leap and High Rock. At the very top of The Ledge, there is a unique rock. This rock has preserved traces, called ichnites, of an ancient creature named Climactichnites.
