Banff (Gaelic Banbh) and Macduff (Gaelic MacDhuibh) are two towns located very close to each other. They sit on Banff Bay in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Both towns used to be special areas called burghs. Until 1975, Banff was the main town, or county town, of Banffshire.

Sports and Activities
If you love sports, Banff and the areas around it have some great teams. There's a local football team called Deveronvale F.C.. There's also a rugby team, Banff RFC, for those who enjoy that sport.
Golf fans have two courses to choose from. The Duff House Royal Golf course is next to the River Deveron and Duff House. Some holes can be tricky, especially when it's windy! Macduff also has a golf course called Royal Tarlair. It's built on land that ends at steep cliffs, so if your ball goes off the edge, it's really gone!
What's in a Name?
The exact meaning of the name "Banff" is a bit of a mystery. It might come from the Gaelic word Banbh, which means a sow (a female pig). It could also come from buinne, meaning a stream. Another idea is that it's a shorter version of Bean-naomh, which means "the holy woman." This idea is even shown on the town's coat-of-arms.
Today, people in Banff and nearby areas often speak the Doric dialect of Scots. They also speak English.
