Bangor is a small community in Butte County, California. It's located about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from the border of Yuba County. This area is called a census-designated place, which means it's a community that the government counts for the census, but it's not officially a city or town.

Bangor sits about 761 feet (232 meters) above sea level. It is in a shallow valley with hills around it that are 800 to 950 feet high. In 2020, about 695 people lived here.

Bangor was started in 1855 during the gold rush as a mining town. Two early settlers and storekeepers, the Lumbert Brothers, named it after their hometown of Bangor, Maine. The first post office opened in 1857.

The community is located where a few roads meet. Oroville-Bangor Highway turns into Los Verjeles Road south of town. These roads run mostly north and south. LaPorte Road goes somewhat east and west through the community. Bangor uses the 530 area code and has a ZIP code of 95914.

Bangor was first counted as a special census area in the 2010 U.S. Census.

In 2010, Bangor had a population of 646 people. Most of the people, about 84%, were White. There were also people from other backgrounds, including Native American, African American, and Asian. About 7% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.

The population was spread out by age. About 26% of the people were under 18 years old. Around 18% were 65 years or older. The average age in Bangor was about 46.9 years.

Things to Do and See

Bangor is becoming known for its growing wine industry. This is because the area has good soil and climate for growing grapes. Bangor is part of the North Sierra Wine Trail. This trail covers the eastern foothills of Lake Oroville and goes through Bangor.

In 2010, the Bangor Bake Shoppe opened. It's owned by a Mennonite family and sells homemade baked goods, jams, and quilts.

The Bangor Firehouse Ghost

Some people say that Butte County Fire Station 55 in Bangor used to be haunted. Firefighters told stories about a "firehouse ghost." They said it would sometimes hold them down in their beds. It would also pull ignition cords from the fire engine. The old fire station was taken down and a new one was built in 2010.
