Bankers Hill, also known as Park West, is a well-known neighborhood in San Diego, California. It's located close to the famous Balboa Park. This area used to be called Florence Heights.

Bankers Hill is known for being a beautiful place to live with great views. Many people consider it a fancy neighborhood, which is how it got its name – because "bankers" (people who work in banks and often have good incomes) used to live there.

Bankers Hill (also called Park West) is in the northwest part of Central San Diego.

Where is Bankers Hill?

Bankers Hill is in a great spot in San Diego.

  • To the north, it touches the Hillcrest neighborhood at Upas Street.
  • To the south, it's next to downtown San Diego, near Interstate 5, which is a big freeway.
  • To the east, it borders Balboa Park, a huge and popular park.
  • To the west, it's near Interstate 5, the charming Little Italy area, and the Midtown neighborhood.

Some people think Bankers Hill is a bit smaller, with its eastern edge at Fourth Avenue and its western edge at First Avenue.

What's it like in Bankers Hill?

Bankers Hill is mostly a place where people live, especially south of Laurel Street and west of Fifth Avenue. There's also a small area with shops and businesses along First Avenue, between Hawthorne and Juniper Streets.

You can find many tall apartment buildings (condominiums) along Fifth and Sixth Avenues. These buildings face Balboa Park, offering amazing views. If you go further west in Bankers Hill, you can see even more incredible sights from a high spot. You can see:

  • Downtown San Diego's skyline
  • The sparkling San Diego Bay
  • The San Diego International Airport
  • The island city of Coronado
  • Harbor Island
  • And even Mount Soledad in the distance!

Many of the houses in Bankers Hill are quite old, built in the late 1800s. Some of these historic homes have been carefully fixed up and are now used as offices or cozy bed-and-breakfasts where people can stay. Famous architects like Irving Gill, William Hebbard, Richard Requa, and Frank Mead designed some of the beautiful homes in this area.
