A Look at Banyalbufar's History
The Name's Origin
The name Banyalbufar comes from two old Arabic words. Banya means "constructed" or "founded". Bahar means "sea". So, the name Banyalbufar means "founded by the sea". This name came from a Moorish settlement that was built on the island in the 10th century.
Early Rulers and Agriculture
After the Catalans took over Majorca in 1229, Banyalbufar was controlled by Gilabert de Cruïlles and Ramon sa Clusa. For a long time, until the 15th century, the area was ruled by the Barony of Banyalbufar. The baron had a lot of power over everyone living there.
The people of Banyalbufar mostly focused on farming. Fishing was a smaller activity. They grew many crops like wheat, barley, olives, and flax. But the most important crop was wine, especially from the local Malvasier grape. This wine was so good that the King of Aragon loved it! In the past, Banyalbufar was almost entirely covered in vineyards.
Smart Farming Methods
Today, farmers mostly grow tomatoes and other fruits. Getting water to the fields has always been important for farming. The ancient Moors were very clever at this. They built aqueducts, which are like water bridges, to bring water from the mountains to the farms for free. They also built dry stone walls to slow down water flow and created many basins to collect extra water. These smart systems are still used today!
People of Banyalbufar
In 2005, Banyalbufar had 568 people living there. This means about 31 people lived in each square kilometer. Most people in 1991 were from Majorca (85.7%). A smaller number came from other parts of Spain (8.3%) or other countries (about 6%).
The highest number of people living in Banyalbufar was in 1920, with 894 inhabitants. The population dropped a lot in the next ten years. In 1930, there were only 200 people.
Most people in Banyalbufar have a basic education.
