Scientific classification

Meet the Barahona rock frog, also known as the Hispaniola dwarf robber frog. Its scientific name is Eleutherodactylus alcoae. This special little frog belongs to a family called Eleutherodactylidae. It lives only in the southern part of an island called Hispaniola. When an animal lives only in one specific place, we say it is endemic there.

Where the Barahona Rock Frog Lives

The Barahona rock frog makes its home on the Barahona Peninsula. This area is in the Dominican Republic. You can also find it in nearby coastal parts of Haiti.

These frogs love dry places. Their natural habitat is a type of forest called a dry scrub forest. During the day, they hide from the sun. They find cool, safe spots inside caves and small cracks in rocks.

Protecting the Barahona Rock Frog

The Barahona rock frog is quite common in places where it can live happily. However, scientists only know about three main spots where these frogs are found. These important places are in danger.

The biggest threat to these frogs is habitat loss. This means their homes are being destroyed. Even though some of these frogs live inside protected areas, like the Jaragua National Park and Sierra de Bahoruco National Park, their habitat is still being damaged. It's important to protect these special places so the Barahona rock frog can continue to thrive.
