Baranwal (also spelled Barnwal, Burnwal, Bernwal, Varanwal, Varnwal, Barnawal) is a Hindu community found throughout northern India, including Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat along with a sprinkled presence in Rajasthan, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh. The name of the caste derives from "Baran" or "Barn", a former name of the Bulandshahr city. The community derives from ancient legendary king Ahibaran.
Historically, there has been no unanimity regarding number and names of gotras, and there are regional differences between the list of gotras. There is 36 gotra in baranwal community. Some of the gotras like Kasyap and Kaushik are specific to Rajputs.
