Barbara Doherty (born December 2, 1931 – died August 17, 2020) was an important educator and a expert in theology. She was a Roman Catholic religious sister, which means she dedicated her life to God and her community. She belonged to a group called the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.
Sister Barbara was the president of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in Indiana for many years, from 1984 to 1998. She also held other important roles. She directed a program for religious training in Chicago and led the Indiana Conference of Higher Education. She was also part of national groups that supported women religious and women's colleges.

About Barbara Doherty's Life
Barbara Doherty was born on December 2, 1931. She went to Providence High School in Chicago. There, she met the Sisters of Providence, who inspired her. After finishing high school, she joined the Sisters of Providence in 1951. In 1953, she made her final promises and took the name Sister Vincent Ferrer. Later, she decided to use her birth name, Barbara Doherty, again.
Her Education and Learning
Barbara Doherty was a very educated person. She earned bachelor's degrees in Latin, English, and history from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. She also earned a master's degree in Sacred Doctrine from Saint Mary's College (Indiana). Later, she received a doctorate in Theology from Fordham University. She was also given special honorary degrees from Indiana State University and Dominican University.
Her Work and Leadership
In the 1940s and 1950s, Barbara Doherty helped people in need. She worked with a group called Friendship House and helped people on Chicago's Skid Row. In 1963, she started working to train new sisters in her religious group. In 1964, she became the Mistress of Postulants. In this role, she helped guide the sisters through big changes. These changes were needed because of the Second Vatican Council, which updated many practices in the Catholic Church.
In 1982, Barbara Doherty helped create the Women of Providence in Collaboration. This group brought together different religious communities. She traveled and lectured in many parts of the world. These places included Europe, Asia, Central America, South America, and Polynesia. She also taught about different religions, like Hinduism and Buddhism.
From 2007 to 2011, Barbara Doherty worked for the Shrine of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin. This shrine honors the founder of the Sisters of Providence. Barbara Doherty passed away on August 17, 2020.
