About Barlin
Barlin is a town that used to be a busy coal mining center. Today, it is known for light engineering and farming. It is located about 7 miles (11 km) south of a city called Béthune. Barlin is also about 30 miles (48 km) southwest of Lille, another larger city. You can find Barlin where the D57, D179, and D188 roads meet.
Barlin's History
The town of Barlin has a long history. It was first mentioned in a very old document in the year 1141. Back then, it was spelled "Ballin" or "Bellin."
How Barlin Got Its Name
The name of the town changed a few times over many centuries:
- In 1141, it was called Ballin.
- By 1438, it was known as Bellin.
- In 1556, the name changed to Barlaing.
It wasn't until the 1600s that the name finally became Barlin, as we know it today.
Early Rulers of Barlin
In the 12th century, the land of Barlin was split into several areas. Each area was controlled by a different lord or ruler. These lords were connected to bigger places like Saint-Pol-sur-Ternoise, Arras, or Béthune.
In 1207, a person named Thomas Hasbare was the lord of Barlin. Later, the Melun family took over. One of their lords, nicknamed Le Brun, was a special helper to the king. However, his land was taken away by Duke John the Fearless. The Duke believed Le Brun was helping his enemies. So, the Duke of Burgundy gave Barlin's land and its income to Walleran de Juhaucourt.
The Coal Mining Era
In the middle of the 1800s, coal mining started in Barlin. This was a very important time for the town. The mines brought many jobs and helped Barlin grow and become a busy place. However, the coal mines eventually closed down in the 1960s.
Barlin Today
Even though the mines are closed, Barlin is still a lively and modern town. It offers many helpful things for the people who live there. These include schools for children of different ages, a swimming pool for fun and exercise, a library for reading and learning, and sports halls for various activities.
