The title of Baron Montagu of Beaulieu is a special noble rank in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1885. The name "Beaulieu" (pronounced "bewley") comes from French words meaning "beautiful place." This title belongs to a family in Hampshire, England.

The first person to hold this title was Lord Henry Montagu Douglas Scott. He was a politician who belonged to the Conservative Party. He had served as a member of the House of Commons, which is part of the UK Parliament. Lord Henry was the second son of the 5th Duke of Buccleuch.

His son, the second Baron, also became a politician. He represented the New Forest area in Parliament. The third Baron Montagu of Beaulieu was one of the ninety hereditary peers who still have a seat in the House of Lords. The House of Lords is the upper house of the UK Parliament. The current holder of the title is Ralph Douglas-Scott-Montagu, the 4th Baron.

History of the Montagu of Beaulieu Title

Beaulieu Palace House: A Historic Family Home

The main home of the Barons Montagu of Beaulieu is Beaulieu Palace House. This historic house is located in Beaulieu, Hampshire. It was built around the gatehouse of an old monastery called Beaulieu Abbey. You can still see many parts of the abbey ruins on the estate today.

The house was bought in 1538 by Thomas Wriothesley, 1st Earl of Southampton. This happened when King Henry VIII closed down many monasteries, including Beaulieu Abbey. The house later became part of the Montagu family. This happened when Ralph Montagu, the 3rd Baron Montagu, married Lady Elizabeth Wriothesley. She was the daughter of Thomas Wriothesley, 4th Earl of Southampton.

Earlier Titles Connected to Beaulieu

Before the current Montagu of Beaulieu title, there was another title linked to the name Beaulieu. This was for Edward Hussey. He married Lady Isabella Montagu. She was the daughter of John Montagu, 2nd Duke of Montagu. Edward Hussey later changed his family name to Hussey-Montagu.

He was given the title Baron Beaulieu in 1762. Then, he became the Earl of Beaulieu in 1784. These titles were part of the Peerage of Great Britain. However, they ended when he passed away in 1802, as he had no one to inherit them.

How the Montagu Family Connected to the Scotts

The Montagu family line later joined with the Scott family. The Scott family was led by the Duke of Buccleuch. This happened when Henry Scott, 3rd Duke of Buccleuch, married Lady Elizabeth Montagu. She was the daughter of George Montagu, 1st Duke of Montagu.

After this marriage, the Scott family added Montagu Douglas to their name. As mentioned earlier, Lord Henry Montagu Douglas Scott was the second son of the 5th Duke of Buccleuch. He was given the title Baron Montagu of Beaulieu in 1885. He then changed his family name to Douglas-Scott-Montagu.

Documentary About the Third Baron

The previous owner of Beaulieu and his oldest son were featured in a film. The documentary was called Lord Montagu. It was made by Luke Korem. The film was about the life and achievements of Edward Montagu-Scott. It was shown at the Newport Beach Film Festival in California in 2013.

Barons Montagu of Beaulieu (Since 1885)

The heir presumptive is the current Baron's half-brother. This means he would inherit the title if the current Baron had no children. His name is the Hon. Jonathan Deane Montagu-Scott (born 1975).
