Henry John Douglas-Scott-Montagu (born November 5, 1832 – died November 4, 1905) was an important British politician. He was known as Lord Henry Scott until 1885. He belonged to the Conservative Party. Later, he became the 1st Baron Montagu of Beaulieu.

Early Life and Education

Henry John Douglas-Scott-Montagu was born on November 5, 1832. He was the second son of the 5th Duke of Buccleuch. His mother was Lady Charlotte Anne Thynne. He went to Eton, a famous school in England.

Travels for Health

When Henry was young, he had severe asthma. Doctors suggested he spend cold British winters in warmer places. So, from age 15, he traveled overseas every winter with his tutor. These trips became longer and took him to many different countries.

He visited places like Madeira, Egypt, the West Indies, Turkey, Greece, South Africa, and the Pacific Islands. These travels lasted for 14 years.

Visiting Australia

In March 1853, Henry and his friend, Lord Schomberg Kerr, arrived in Sydney, Australia. Young British aristocrats were not common visitors there. Many families in Sydney wanted them to attend dinners and social events. Henry made many drawings and paintings during his time in Australia. Some of these artworks are now kept in libraries in Australia.

Political Career

Henry John Douglas-Scott-Montagu was a member of the Conservative Party. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for two different areas.

He was the MP for Selkirkshire from 1861 to 1868. Then, he represented South Hampshire from 1868 to 1884. In 1885, he was given a special title. He became Baron Montagu of Beaulieu, which meant he was a member of the House of Lords.

Family Life

Lord Montagu of Beaulieu married Cecily Susan Stuart-Wortley in 1865. They had two sons and one daughter. Their daughter was the Honourable Rachel Cecily Montagu-Scott. She later married Henry Forster, who became the 1st Baron Forster.
