History of Barros
How Barros Became Part of the U.S.
The island of Puerto Rico, including Barros, was once under the control of Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened as part of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. From that point on, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States.
Early Population Counts
Soon after, in 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a special count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census showed that the population of Barros barrio was 987 people at that time. Over the years, the population has grown.
