Barry Henry Stobart (born June 6, 1938 – died August 28, 2013) was an English footballer. He played as a forward for several famous clubs. These included Wolverhampton Wanderers, Manchester City, Aston Villa, and Shrewsbury Town. He played during the 1960s in the Football League.
Playing Career
Barry Stobart started his football journey at Wath Wanderers. This club was a special training ground for young players. It was linked to Wolverhampton Wanderers. In 1953, he moved south to join Wolverhampton Wanderers. He became a professional player in 1955.
In his early years, Barry played mostly for the reserve team. This was because many great players were already in the main team. He finally played his first game for the main team on March 5, 1960. He even scored a goal in a 2–0 win against Manchester United.
Even though he played only a few league games, his skill in the final league match impressed everyone. This earned him a surprise spot in the 1960 FA Cup Final team. He helped Wolves win the FA Cup by defeating Blackburn 3–0 at Wembley. This was the only medal he won in his career. Barry Stobart was known as "Kangaroo Kid." This nickname came from his amazing ability to jump high and score goals with his head.
For the next two seasons, he played only sometimes for the first team. But in the 1962–63 season, he played much more often. He scored 14 goals that year. The next year, he was back in the reserves. In the summer of 1964, he left Molineux to join Manchester City.
He didn't stay long at Maine Road, Manchester City's home ground. After only a few months, he moved back to the Midlands. He joined Aston Villa in November 1964 for £22,000. He played for Villa for three years. His best season there was 1966–67. He scored 11 goals in 20 games. In October 1967, he joined Shrewsbury Town for £10,000. They were in the Third Division. After playing for them, he moved to South Africa. He finished his playing career with Durban Spurs.
Barry's oldest son, Sean Stobart, also became a professional footballer. He scored a goal in his first game for Scunthorpe United. His youngest son, Loy, also played football. He was with Wolverhampton Wanderers in the early 1990s. Loy also played for Cheltenham Town FC and Bidvest Witts in South Africa.
Life After Football
After his playing days, Barry Stobart became a coach. He coached Willenhall Town FC and led them to an FA Vase final in 1981 at Wembley. He also helped some semi-professional players become professionals. Later, he worked as a greengrocer. His final job was as a window cleaner in the Sedgley area.
Barry Stobart passed away on August 28, 2013.
