When Was Barryton Started?

The village of Barryton was officially created in 1894. It has been a community for over a hundred years!

A Big Decision in 2020

In 2020, some people wanted to change how Barryton was run. They started a petition to "dissolve" the village. This would have meant it would no longer be a separate village.

Enough people signed the petition for it to be voted on. However, the idea was voted against, so Barryton stayed a village. If it had passed, it would have been the first village in Michigan to ever choose to stop being a village on its own.

Barryton is in the northeastern part of Mecosta County. It's about 21 miles (34 km) east of Big Rapids, which is the main city of the county. It's also about 30 miles (48 km) northwest of Mount Pleasant.
